Innovation, Design & Entrepreneurship in Action (IDEA) Network Grants

The University of Delaware Innovation, Design & Entrepreneurship Action (IDEA) Network empowers students, faculty and staff to turn ideas into reality through the action of making things. As a component of the Maker Space initiative at UD, the IDEA Network interconnects people, resources and spaces, by encouraging a campus-wide spirit of collaboration, innovation, entrepreneurship and inclusive excellence. The nexus of the network is the UD MakerGym (opening Fall 2019), a state-of-the-art maker space providing access to equipment, tools, training and other resources to the entire university community.

This grant program’s goal is provide faculty members with funding for equipment and related training that both (1) expands their teaching or research and (2) contributes to the IDEA Network resources that are available to the entire university community. We favor proposals from faculty who wish to learn by-doing with a new piece of equipment, which then becomes an accessible network resource for other faculty, staff or students, in some capacity. Equipment will be the property of the UD MakerGym yet located in the faculty member or department’s controlled space on campus. Funds may be used for costs associated with installation and initial setup of equipment, (please indicate this in the proposed budget).

Following installation, setup and training, faculty awarded with this grant are expected to participate in the creation of training documents and videos, (funded and coordinated through the MakerGym), if applicable.

It is expected that proposals will allocate the summer months to acquiring equipment and the fall and spring semesters to using and learning. All funds must be spent by June 30, 2020.

Proposals must include:

  • Project description including description of equipment, proposed location of equipment, rationale for equipment use and need, plan for access and consideration of UD’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, as appropriate.
  • Clearly articulated timeline
  • Detailed budget for equipment purchase, installation and training
  • Budget justification
  • Indication of any matching funds
  • Letter of support from department chair indicating funding support for any on-going equipment maintenance and participation in IDEA Network for a minimum of 3 years

Funds up to $25,000 will be awarded to proposals based on:

  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary applications of proposed equipment
  • General accessibility of equipment as part of the UD IDEA Network
  • Impact on the largest number of university community members
  • Expansion of existing capabilities and/or critically needed capacity
  • Stated awareness and compliance with UD’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards
