Brown Lab, Room 101
University of Delaware – Newark Campus

Join us for a once-in-a-generation event as the first images from the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory are unveiled, marking the start of a new era in astronomy.

From a mountaintop in Chile, Vera C. Rubin Observatory, equipped with the largest digital camera in the world, will revolutionize what we know about the universe. The new observatory, built with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, will livestream its first images to watch parties around the world — including right here at UD — on Monday, June 23.

Deputy Project Scientist and Interim Head of Science for Rubin Observatory — Professor Federica Bianco — will be part of an expert panel livestreamed from event headquarters at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. At UD, her research team and fellow faculty will help bring this historic event to life for the campus community and the broader public.

Discover what the project is about, see the first images, and learn more about the cosmos from UD experts. We will celebrate the event with another out-of-this-world experience — UDairy ice cream!

Organized by the UD Department of Physics and Astronomy in collaboration with the Research Office. Questions about the event? Contact the UD Research Office.

The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science (DOE/SC). Rubin Observatory is a program of NSF NOIRLab, which, along with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, jointly operate Rubin.
