Reducing dementia risk
POSTED: August 10, 2026
New research by Daniel Harris, assistant professor of epidemiology, found that older adults in nursing homes who received the shingles vaccine had a 25% lower risk of developing dementia than those who were not vaccinated. Published in “Annals of Internal Medicine,” one of the world's leading medical journals, the four-year study analyzed electronic health record data and adds to growing evidence that preventing infection and inflammation may help protect brain health as people age. The findings have also prompted Harris to investigate whether the vaccine could help prevent stroke.
