Limited Face-to-Face Human Subject Interaction This research includes face-to-face human subject interaction. The Motor Neuroscience and Neuroimaging lab has received approval to resume Parkinson’s disease research on the STAR campus and at the brain imaging facility (CBBI) on the main campus. We would to like request approval for consenting Parkinson’s disease patients in person as part of a new project called the “University of Delaware Participant Recruitment Registry for Parkinson’s Disease Research” (IRB no. 1535874-5). The purpose of the patient registry is to facilitate enrollment of Parkinson’s disease patients in research studies conducted at UD. Currently, the protocol allows us to consent either in person or electronically depending on the patient’s preference. If it’s in person, we would like to ask permission to meet and consent the patients in our research lab (#235 in the STAR Tower) while following UD’s Covid-19 safety policies. Currently, we are approved to have not more than 2 people in the lab (lab is 302 sq ft.). Our interactions would not last more than 15-30 minutes and will not involve any direct contact with the participant. The protocol does not involve any testing. The patient would have to fill out a consent form and other paperwork necessary for the enrollment in the registry. More details on safety measures are provided in the section below.
Physical Distancing and Density Requirements Our plan is to meet the patient in the lobby at STAR and take him to our research lab on the second floor of the STAR Tower. Only one lab member will interact with the patient and consent him/her. Consenting to be part of the Parkinson’s disease registry would be done in the following conditions:
– Physical distancing of minimum 6 ft. or more. We have a large table in our lab and we would have the participant sit at one end and the researche at the other end.
– At all times, the researcher would wear: 1) surgical mask, 2) face shield, 3) gloves
– A surgical mask will be provided to the patients in case they don’t come with a mask. Gloves can be provided if requested.
– Temperature check at the entrance to the STAR Tower for both researcher and participant.
– Both the researcher and participant will need to be cleared to be on campus. They patient will be provided with the link to the UD Covid-19 Health Survey and asked to email a copy of the results to the survey to the researcher. The survey would be taken prior to coming to campus.
– Disinfection of the lab before and after each participant (lab surfaces, contact points such as door handle etc.). Hand sanitizer available in the lab at all times.
– No physical contact is needed as the protocol does not involve any testing. All that will be done is paperwork.
